A Favourite Returns: 2023 Limited Release Sangiovese
Some wines leave an impression from the first pour.
Our 2023 Sangiovese quickly became a favourite among the Bimbadgen team, Wine Society members and guests visiting our Cellar Door. With its vibrant red fruit, savoury complexity and elegant structure, it was a wine people remembered and regularly asked to taste again.
We are pleased to bring it back as the latest addition to our Limited Release range. With just 370 bottles available, its return will be brief.
A Wine Worth Revisiting
From its earliest stages, this small parcel of Sangiovese showed a distinctive sense of elegance and restraint.
“I remember this parcel from the vineyard through fermentation and the decision to bottle it much earlier than we traditionally would, a bold move at the time. Revisiting it a few years later and finding that same personality still shining through is incredibly rewarding,” says Bimbadgen Winemaker Sam Boyd. “The wine has retained the elegance, freshness and poise we had hoped for, making it a pleasure to see released once again.”
Its return is an opportunity to share a wine that has remained a genuine favourite within Bimbadgen and among those who first discovered it through our Cellar Door tastings.
From Lovedale to the Bottle
The fruit was sourced locally from Lovedale in the Hunter Valley during the outstanding 2023 vintage.
Following harvest, the fruit underwent a two-day cold soak before a ten-day fermentation. The cap was plunged twice daily to encourage colour and flavour extraction, while maturation in older French oak complemented the wine’s delicate fruit weight without overpowering it.
The wine was bottled on 7 December 2023, capturing the brightness and energy that made the parcel stand out from the beginning.
What to Expect in the Glass
Crimson in colour with a vibrant purple hue, this Sangiovese opens with aromas of red plum, cherry and fig.
The palate is complex and gently spicy, with generous cherry fruit, smooth tannins and a natural freshness that carries through to a long, savoury finish.
There is an elegance to the wine that makes it immediately enjoyable, while its balance and structure will allow it to continue developing over the next few years.
Its bright fruit and savoury character make it a natural partner for tomato-based pasta, roasted meats or charred vegetables. It is equally rewarding enjoyed on its own, particularly for those who appreciate a red wine defined by freshness and restraint rather than sheer weight.
Part of Our Limited Release Range
Our Limited Release range gives the Bimbadgen winemaking team the freedom to work with exclusive small parcels of fruit and create interesting, handcrafted wines that may sit outside our traditional varieties and styles.
Produced in extremely small quantities, each release provides an opportunity to share a wine with a unique story, character or sense of place.
The return of our 2023 Sangiovese captures exactly what the range was created for: a distinctive wine that earned a loyal following and deserved another moment in the spotlight.
Only 370 bottles of this wine are available.
